UK Investigates TikTok Over Child Data Privacy

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur to safeguard children’s online privacy. The probe scrutinizes how these platforms handle younger users’ personal data and ensure compliance with data protection laws. Specifically, the ICO will focus on TikTok’s use of personal information from users aged 13 to 17 to deliver content recommendations, questioning if its algorithms expose children to inappropriate or harmful content. Simultaneously, they are examining Reddit and Imgur’s age verification measures, assessing how effectively these platforms estimate or confirm younger users’ ages to tailor safe experiences. This action reflects growing global apprehension about data privacy practices on social media platforms. Notably, the US attempted to ban TikTok due to concerns about potential data access by the Chinese government. In the UK, the ICO’s children’s code, introduced in 2021, mandates robust protection of children’s personal information online.

Information Commissioner John Edwards emphasized the importance of these investigations, stating that while positive safety measures may exist, they must be robust enough to prevent harm. Whether from addictive platform practices or inappropriate content. TikTok previously faced regulatory actions in the UK.

In April 2023, the ICO fined the platform £12.7 million for misusing children’s data. The ICO’s current investigation will assess potential infringements of data protection legislation. If they find evidence of breaches, the regulator will present its findings to the platforms for their response before reaching a final conclusion. Edwards clarified that the ICO is not singling out TikTok but aims to understand the broader social media landscape, noting that various platforms employ techniques to maximize user engagement, which could potentially lead to harm. This investigation underscores the UK’s commitment to enforcing stringent data protection standards, especially concerning younger users. As social media platforms continue to evolve and attract younger audiences, regulators worldwide prioritize their safety and privacy.
