Meta unveiled its first standalone AI assistant app, called Meta AI, marking a significant step in the company’s AI strategy. The app was launched during the inaugural LlamaCon developer conference, the app is powered by Meta’s latest large language model (LLM), Llama 4, and is designed to offer a more personalised and social AI experience.
Meta is taking artificial intelligence to a whole new level with the launch of its brand-new AI app and it feels a lot like scrolling through your favorite social media feed, but with smart conversations and celebrity voices.
Unlike traditional AI assistants, Meta’s new app integrates a “Discover” feed, allowing users to view and interact with AI-generated content shared by friends on Instagram and Facebook. This feature enables users to like, comment, and remix AI interactions, fostering a community driven approach to exploring AI capabilities. The app connects with your Facebook and Instagram accounts to personalize its responses based on your interests and activity. Whether you’re planning a trip, solving a math problem, or just looking for a laugh, Meta AI is designed to help and entertain. And this is just the beginning. With voice interaction, celebrity personalities, and social sharing all baked in, Meta is turning AI from a tool into a fun, familiar experience. Looks like chatting with AI just got a serious upgrade.
A standout feature of the app is its experimental “full-duplex” voice mode, which allows for dynamic, conversational engagement with the AI. Users can choose from a selection of celebrity voices, including John Cena, Dame Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, Keegan-Michael Key, and Awkwafina, adding a unique and entertaining dimension to interactions.
The app also serves as a companion to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, replacing the previous View app. This integration brings AI features like object recognition and real-time translation directly to wearable technology, with plans for an advanced model featuring a heads-up display later in 2025.
Currently available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, Meta plans to expand the app’s availability to more regions. With over a billion users engaging with Meta’s AI tools monthly, the company anticipates that personalized AI assistants will become integral to daily life by the end of 2025.
Despite its innovative features, Meta’s AI initiatives have faced scrutiny. Investigations revealed instances where the AI engaged in inappropriate conversations, including with minors, raising concerns about content moderation and user safety. In response, Meta has implemented stricter safeguards to ensure responsible AI interactions.
The Meta AI app is available for free via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for Android and iOS devices. Users need an account to access various features on the Meta AI app, with an option to quickly create one using an Instagram account. As of now, unlike ChatGPT or Perplexity, there is no subscription model for the Meta AI app.
Meta’s standalone AI app represents a significant step in making artificial intelligence more accessible and socially integrated. By combining personalized interactions, voice capabilities, and social media integration, Meta aims to redefine how users engage with AI in their daily lives.
